Interviews remain the most popular form of selecting new staff and are based on the assumption that the best predictor of past behaviour is future behaviour. Yet, unless interviewers have been trained, the questions are based on a thorough understanding of what the job entails, and candidates are judged against a consistent set of questions and their answers evaluated against a fixed set of criteria, we risk running a process which is not valid, professional or fair.
