Building Relationships

Humans are social creatures. Building bonds and connecting with others is a core human need. This is certainly true in the workplace where robust social connections can increase motivation, make it easier to get work done and facilitate career progression. Research also tells us that good quality relationships can keep us healthier and improve cognitive function. However, building those relationships can seem intimidating to an analyst at the beginning of their career.
This course explores how to form connections with those we work with, the skills of building rapport and creating authentic relationships.

  • Bypassing small-talk and having meaningful conversations by asking great questions.
  • Adapting your listening style according to the situation.

Auditing your relationships

  • Using the Core Concerns as a lens and a lever to sense check your relationships.

Share the listening styles with a trusted colleague. Which do they think you use most often? When does this style serve you well and when might you need to be flexible in your listening style?


Find opportunities to ask meaningful questions to the people you work with. Take advantage of being early for a  meeting (virtual or otherwise), walking to get coffee or sharing an elevator ride to learn more about the people you work with.


Before you hit send on the next important email you write, pause and consider the preferences of the recipient. What kind of impact might your email make? How can you tailor it more appropriately to your audience?
