• Flex the way they communicate insights to meet the needs of a specific audience.
• Apply design principles to communicate powerful messages.
• Structure the exploration of data into multiple visualizations to tell a story.

Course Content

• Identifying user needs when presenting data:
o Understanding context: who, what, how, why?
o Distilling down: the Three-Minute Pitch
o Distilling further: the Big Idea EXERCISE: Identify user needs

• Data Storytelling
o Orientation: What do you understand by a story? What transforms a random chain of events or information into a story?
o Tools and techniques for packaging ideas into a story
o H3A: A structure you can use anytime you need to make a succinct “elevator” presentation of your ideas.
• EXERCISE: Rocket Pitch [Excel + PowerPoint exercise]
