Excel Workouts: Statistics, Probability and Regression Analysis

In this Excel session participants are given a 5 year history of a U.S. stock and it’s Index, and are required to, build return distributions, perform a linear regression, then forecast a stock using CAPM and confidence intervals. Participants are introduced to a range of practical applications in Excel for statistics, probability, regression analysis and trend forecasting.

These intermediate Microsoft Excel courses are designed for delegates who have used Excel before and want to expand their knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to apply
– Excel statistical tools, present and explain metrics
– Undertake regression analysis
– Create and apply forecasting models and tools to data
– Analyse and explain Confidence Intervals and statistical significance

Course Content

– Descriptive Statistics: AVERAGE, MEDIAN, STDEV (Historic Volatility), SKEW, KURT, QUARTILE / IQR
– Building Return Distribution Histograms and Calculating Value at Risk (VaR): FREQUENCY (Array Function), NORMDIST, NORMSINV, PERCENTILE
– Forecasting asset prices using stochastic models: Building a geometric Brownian motion Monte Carlo Simulation using NORMSINV(RAND()) and historic volatility
– Linear Regression Statistics: INTERCEPT, SLOPE, CORREL, R^2, FORECAST
– Forecasting stock prices using CAPM and Confidence Intervals: Stating the bounds of stock performance given historic / implied volatility.
– Automating the model with the use of Data Validation and INDIRECT
– Charts: Column, Line, X, Y Scatter
