Skilful Stakeholder Management

Stakeholder Management is a key skill for navigating the workplace, and one which most employees, in whatever sort of business, and whether working with internal or external stakeholders, will need to develop for the longer term. Stakeholder Management involves a combination of people skills (e.g. building rapport), and process skills (e.g. how do you identify and manage your stakeholders efficiently and effectively?), and this session focuses on confidence and competence in both of those areas. This is an applied session with participants expected to be fully engaged throughout.

Course Content

What is “Stakeholder Management”?

  • What are the benefits? What’s my mind-set?
  • What strengths do I have? What de-rails me?

Stakeholder Management – People

  • Recap of key skills (rapport, questioning & listening, flexing to different styles).
  • Identifying which skills you can leverage more effectively.
  • Applying science: Cialdini’s 6 Principles of Influence, and how you can apply them to managing stakeholders.

Stakeholder Management – Process

  • Stakeholder mapping using the Power/Interest Grid
  • Identifying creative ways of expanding and managing your stakeholder map.
  • Using process to help you deliver on your commitments.

Action Planning

Drafting your own stakeholder map; peer coaching (see Example Exercise).
