Finding ways to increase motivation is crucial because it allows us to change behaviour, develop competencies, be creative and boost engagement. As a people leader, it is essential we take the time to understand our team members and appreciate what drives them at work and how we can maximise their potential.
This module looks at the role of a Manager in creating highly engaged teams, whether they be co-located or remote, and consider the ways to engage, excite and inspire every individual in the team.

Understanding Motivation

  • Driving vs Inspiring (Folkman and Zenger – Competence, Passion and Organisational Needs).

Engaging the team as a whole

  • Establishing a shared sense of purpose.
  • The importance of trust.
  • Your Role as a Manager*.

Sustaining Engagement for Your Team

  • Identifying Demotivators and Positive Motivators.

  • Yourself to understand what motivates each one of your team members.
  • Identify ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors that will inspire your team members.

CREATE

  • Opportunities to discuss motivation and engagement.
  • Review the untapped potential in your team and consider how to release that potential to maximum affect.

CHANGE

  • The tone of conversations in team meetings.
  • Track the relationship between motivation, engagement and outcome.

Embedding Success

Post programme activities to support the transfer of learning and building of habits.

CHALLENGE: Have a conversation

In your next one-to-one, set aside time to discuss motivation.  What does this person enjoy about their role?  What demotivates them?  What are their aspirations, career or otherwise?

CREATE: A cohesive team.

Explore whether your team has a shared sense of purpose.  Can they articulate what that purpose is?  Who are the key stakeholders?  How does the team add value to the organisation?

CHANGE: The focus of team discussions.

Revisit team goals.  Using the Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose framework, explore opportunities for individual development and overall team advancement.  Specify what success looks like and how to measure progression.
